My Review: Casper&Gambini’s Restaurant and Café

Reviews

So last week Friday, 18th March, I had an interesting time with my colleague-turned-friend, and business partner. As usual, we had a very busy and productive day at the office so we decided that it won’t be a bad idea if we hung out after work to unwind a little. I mean a little play never hurt anyone! Plus it was Friday #TGIF and I saw it as another opportunity to write a food review. As always, it wasn’t so easy picking out a restaurant to visit and there were loads and loads of them in the area, so we were tasked with the responsibility of picking one before the end of work.

Thankfully, my friend finally came through and we decided to visit Casper&Gambini’s Restaurant and Café, located off Adeola Odeku on Agoro Odiyan Street, Victoria Island. I had never heard of them before and this made me more interested in visiting the place. I couldn’t wait for close of work to proceed on this food adventure!

Finally the time came! My friend was as eager as I was to get out of the office…apparently he had not eaten all day and needed food so badly! I, on the other hand, wasn’t so hungry; I just wanted to have a nice time and have a feel of what their food tastes like and what the quality of their service was like.

From the minute we parked the car, I knew I was in for an exciting time. One of the guards on duty gave us a very good parking space, helped us park the car with ease and also assured us of the safety of the car. This is something you hardly get from most restaurants in Lagos, Nigeria. We were ushered in by beautifully dressed waiters who had smiles on their faces…that alone made me feel at home in a place I had never visited before. As soon as we walked in, it felt like we were in another part of the world; my friend said he felt like he was in one of the posh restaurants in the UK, that is how good the place looked. In my opinion, the sitting arrangement was amazing, the ambience was fantastic, there was music playing in the background and the volume was turned down, which made it really easy to have a conversation and still enjoy the music.

A waiter was assigned to our table, he came with the menu and politely asked us to choose what we’d like and gave us time to make our choice. The menu was very beautifully designed with colorful pictures of their special dishes well displayed in an excellent manner, and different dishes were broken down into breakfast, starters&appetizers, main dish, desserts, wines&cocktails and drinks, which made it very easy for us to make a choice.

I really began to wonder if their food tastes as good as the excellent service I had been experiencing. Sincerely, I kept an open mind and didn’t get my hopes up.

We closed the menu and beckoned on the waiter, he came immediately and took our orders. I ordered something I had never eaten before and wasn’t so sure if it was going to taste good, but I confidently made the choice. My order was Chicken Jollof Risotto, which consisted of grilled half boneless chicken, jollof risotto (Italian rice), steamed vegetables seasoned with garlic and fried plantain with a tall glass of fresh apple juice and water. My total order rounded up to N6500 only. My friend decided to go with something that had seafood and ordered Prawn Suya, which consisted of grilled prawns with suya spices, tomatoes, onions, coleslaw, served with French fries and a tall glass of fresh ginger and carrot juice with a glass of red wine…His total order cost about N9700 only.

The waiter went on to place the order and immediately came back with a basket containing very hot and soft bread garnished with sesame seeds, crostini and crackers with a creamy dip that had garlic flavor; and as a lover of garlic, I couldn’t get enough of it.

Note that I was getting very excited at this time. Less than 5mins later, the fresh juice, red wine, and water were served. The wine was served in a wine glass, the fresh juice was served in tall glasses with straws and the tip of the straws were covered (i removed mine before the picture was taken).

I immediately thought to myself that these guys are really detailed and excellent. I had never taken apple juice that tasted so damn good. I hadn’t even gotten to the main reason for my visit and I was already super impressed by all I had seen and tasted.

The food finally came less than 20mins after placing the order and trust me when I say we weren’t expecting it so soon. I thought it was gonna take forever or maybe as long as 40mins like most orders in some restaurants usually take. The plating of the food caught our attention immediately. I mean these guys passed all the rules of plating…we picked up the cutlery and began eating immediately.

I started with the grilled boneless chicken and the very first bite took my breath away; what blew my mind was how the flavor and spice got deep into the chicken flesh and how well the chicken was grilled. Immediately I thought to myself, “The chef must be really good,” The steamed veggies were properly steamed and tasted really good too and the Jollof Risotto looked kinda soggy, but also tasted really good. As we were focusing on our food, a tall handsome Lebanese man walked up to us (I think he was the manager of the place) and asked if we were enjoying the meal, or if we required assistance…I was so blown away by that gesture and all I could do was stare at him; my friend immediately bailed me out by saying we were fine and the food was great. #plsdontjudgeme.

I looked at my friend and noticed he was already half way through his food. I was shocked!! For my review, I had to have a taste of his food. I started with the giant grilled prawns that were neatly placed on skewers. It was properly seasoned with suya spice and tasted so good; the chips were properly fried and had a crispy feel. The only issue I had with that dish was the coleslaw. In my opinion, it wasn’t properly made and tasted like it was bad. But that little flaw didn’t change my opinion about Casper&Gambini’s though; they have made the list of my top 5 restaurants to go for great food, quality service, and a nice time with family and friends.

Generally, I had a great time at Casper&Gambini’s and I certainly will be visiting them again to find out if they are actually consistent with their quality of service and food. Just incase you decide to pay them a visit and have a challenge selecting a dish from the menu list, choose from any of the orders my friend and I made; you will not regret it.

Thank you Casper&Gambini’s Restaurant and Café  for an amazing time!!!
