Learn How to Plate Your Food Correctly With Easy Tips

TIPS AND TRICKS

You eat with your eyes first! How your food looks on a plate is an important factor to consider when serving a meal. When it comes to food, people are moved by what they see first before they are moved by the taste of your food. Inliterally loose my appetite when I see a meal that is plated wrongly. I always take out time to enjoy my meal by first examining it with my eyes, before it goes down my throat.

Food plating does not require any special kind of lesson or coaching. All you need is a little bit of your unique creativity and you are good to go. Your next meal should not look like there is a battle going on inside your plate. Keep it simple and stylish and that way your meals come out classy. Whether you are cooking for family and friends or catering at a big event, how you plate your meals is an important art that involves a careful balance of creativity, strategy and cleanliness. Remember like all artists, your plating style is unique to you; let your imagination do the magic as you consider the following tips.

  • Pick your plate – the size, shape and color of your plate will have a great impact on the overall look of your dish. For color, white plates are my favourite choice because it creates a high contrast when paired with other colors, which means that your food will remain the main focus. Also ensure that your serving plates are big enough to let each food item stand out but small enough that the portions don’t look tiny.CH 11
  • Keep it odd – things generally look more interesting when they are in sets of odd numbers rather than even numbers. Groupings of three, five, seven or nine are naturally more appealing to the eye. For example, three pieces of chopped meat on a plate looks better than two pieces of chopped meat.SE 13
  • Create a clock- use a clock layout when choosing the placement of the three basic elements to a dish: protein, carbohydrate and vegetables. Arrange food on a plate by placing the carbohydrate such as rice, pasta, bread, etc at 11 o’clock, the vegetables at 2 o’clock and the proteins at 6’ o’clock from your point of view. This will make your food layout creative and at the same time fill up the space on your plate.
  • Cleanliness matters – keep the canvas of your plate clean by wiping away stray crumbs or dribbles of sauce. Such outlier distracts anyone from the focal point and gives your plate a less polished look.SMB 15
  • Play with height- just like you have with a centrepiece, it is good to have a little bit of height but don’t over do it. Height helps to draw the eye up and toward the focal point of a dish.greek-salad-263745_1280
  • Garnish purposefully- don’t loose sight of the recipe you made in the first place by adding garnishes that do not relate with the dish made. Do not garnish with an ingredient that is not included in the recipe. All garnishes on a plate should be edible and should enhance the flavour of the dish. IMG_3143
Bonus Tip – Parsley leaf is a great ingredient for garnishing. It not only tastes great, it can be used to garnish everything.
