Benefits of Eating a Healthy Breakfast

Health Benefits

I decided to post this article after I invited a colleague to join me in having breakfast this morning, but she declined my offer with the excuse that she doesn’t eat breakfast because she is watching her weight. I was stunned…but trust me, by the time i was done schooling her on the importance of eating a healthy breakfast everyday, she not only joined me to have breakfast that morning, she created a daily breakfast plan for her self.

Skipping breakfast in an attempt to loose weight is a very bad idea. Those that skip breakfast can actually make weight control very difficult because they tend to eat more food than usual during their next meal time or snack on very high calorie food to stave hunger.

Breakfast has an effect on you that’s different from any other meal. Eating a healthy breakfast within 2 hours of waking can make a difference in the way you metabolize glucose or blood sugar all day. Your glucose level rises every time you eat and your pancreas produces insulin to shuttle the glucose into your cells, where it is used for energy. If you don’t bother with breakfast, the prolonged fasting might lead to a bigger than normal boost in hunger hormones, encouraging you to overeat at your next mealtime. See below more benefits of eating a healthy breakfast everyday.

  • Eating a healthy breakfast improves your energy levels
  • It gives more strength and endurance to engage in physical activities
  • It reduces chances of over consuming high calorie foods later in the day
  • Just like any other organ in the body, the brain needs energy to function. Breakfast restores glucose levels, an essential carbohydrate that is needed for the brain to function effectively
  • It improves metabolism
  • It lowers cholesterol levels
  • It improves memory and concentration in the classroom or boardroom.
  • It stabilizes blood sugar levels
  • It provides many beneficial nutrients and boosts your fiber and calcium intake. The body needs these essential nutrients and research shows that if these are missed at breakfast, they are less likely to be compensated for later in the day.

” Establishing good breakfast habits in childhood and maintaining them throughout adolescence may be an important factor in reducing the prevalence of breakfast skipping and developing good eating habits that lasts a lifetime.”
